;APS:00README.TXT.1, 15-Jan-90 12:23:56, Edit by BEEBE TeX Fonts [15-Jan-1990] The TeX directories on all of our local operating systems (PC DOS, TOPS-20, UNIX, VAX VMS) were reorganized during the second week of January, 1990, to bring them into exact correspondence. Obsolete files, and miscellaneous crud that had been accumulating, were removed. The old single font directory was split into several subdirectories, with one font family per directory. UNIX TeX was rebuilt to reflect the changed search paths for TEXFONTS and TEXINPUTS; no changes were need for the other systems. Here are some comments from a bulletin board posting that announced the reorganization: >> Fonts are now stored by family under a subdirectory named fonts. >> Here is what we now have: >> >> TOPS-20: >> aps: American Math Society fonts (default) >> aps: TeX-APS Adobe PostScript fonts >> aps: Computer Modern (default) >> aps: Concrete Computer >> aps: Greek fonts >> aps: Imagen printer fonts >> aps: Music fonts >> aps: Pandora >> >> VAX VMS: >> lib:[tex.fonts.ams] American Math Society fonts (default) >> lib:[tex.fonts.aps] TeX-APS Adobe PostScript fonts >> lib:[tex.fonts.cm] Computer Modern (default) >> lib:[tex.fonts.concrete] Concrete Computer >> lib:[tex.fonts.greek] Greek fonts >> lib:[tex.fonts.imagen] Imagen printer fonts >> lib:[tex.fonts.music] Music fonts >> lib:[tex.fonts.pandora] Pandora >> >> UNIX: >> /usr/local/lib/tex/fonts/ams American Math Society fonts (default) >> /usr/local/lib/tex/fonts/aps TeX-APS Adobe PostScript fonts >> /usr/local/lib/tex/fonts/cm Computer Modern (default) >> /usr/local/lib/tex/fonts/concrete Concrete Computer >> /usr/local/lib/tex/fonts/greek Greek fonts >> /usr/local/lib/tex/fonts/imagen Imagen printer fonts >> /usr/local/lib/tex/fonts/music Music fonts >> /usr/local/lib/tex/fonts/pandora Pandora >> >> The number of font files in each is as follows: >> >> ams 124 >> aps 528 >> cm 1213 >> concrete 48 >> greek 22 >> imagen 253 >> music 36 >> pandora 134 >> >> Observe that except for the different directory syntax, and the >> differing roots of the TeX tree, the directory names are >> identical. >> >> I have regenerated all of the LaTeX circle fonts, because the >> file comparisons today revealed that Don Knuth had made a >> correction to the METAFONT description file, circle.mf, but an >> older version had been used last summer when all of the fonts >> were regenerated. >> >> The default font directories are cm and ams, so that most users >> will not see any changes; UNIX TeX programs, which have >> hard-coded search paths built-in, have all been recompiled to >> reflect the new paths. On the VAX VMS and TOPS-20 systems, only >> changes in system wide logical names for TEXINPUTS and TEXFONTS >> were needed. >> >> Style files to select other fonts, such as pandora or TeX-APS, >> are now in the corresponding font directory, so if you use them, >> you should add that font directory to both TEXFONTS and TEXINPUTS >> paths. Fonts in this directory tree have been generated using METAFONT's standard \mode=imagen setting, which is appropriate for laser printers using most 8 pages/minute black-writing Canon engines. These include the QMS/Imagen 2308, the Apple LaserWriter (all models), and the HP LaserJet (original, Plus, and Series II). These fonts will be too light for the larger Canon engine used in the 20 pages/minute Imagen x320 series, and the white-writing engines from Xerox and Ricoh (the Ricoh is used in the DEC LN03 and the Personal Computer Products LaserImage 2000). If you have such a printer, then you will have to generate the fonts yourself using different parameter values, in particular, a larger `blacker' setting. A substantial amount of CPU time is required to generate these fonts. In 1986, it took 3 months of batch jobs using about 100 CPU hr on a saturated DEC-20/60 to make them. In August 1989, they were regenerated on an idle Sun 3/50 (15MHz Motorola 68020) in about one week. Thus, if you can find already-generated fonts that suit your output devices, it is best to do so, rather than regenerate them yourself. To facilitate Internet retrievals of these fonts, I have prepared UNIX tar files, one for each directory. The cm.tar file is over 6MB, so it has been split into 7 pieces, cm.tar-001 through cm.tar-007, all but the last being exactly 1MB (1024000 bytes) long. To reconstruct cm.tar, just append the pieces in order and untar. None of these files are compressed, because with PK fonts, there is little or no reduction in the file size. You can examine the files *.tar-lst for a contents listing of the corresponding *.tar files. When retrieving 8-bit-byte binary files (arc, dvi, font, tar, ... files) from TOPS-20 to machines with 8-bit bytes, be sure to use `tenex', NOT `binary' mode; see 00readme.txt in the anonymous FTP login directory for details.
